If you have any unicorn obsessed kids in your life, then this is your next baking project: unicorn cookies! These are like soft sugar cookies—think chocolate chip cookies but without any chocolate chips. These unicorn cookies are easy to make, colorful, whimsical, and sure to please any unicorn lovers in your life. Find more kid-friendly cooking projects in our Recipe archive.
The dough for this recipe is simple and may be a good project to work on with older kids, to practice measuring and following instructions.
We then divide the dough and add a few drops of food coloring to create the different colors. This may be a good step to do with kids if you want to teach color theory. As a refresher:
Red + Blue = Purple
Blue + Yellow = Green
Red + Yellow = Orange
And my #1 secret to the best unicorn cookies is roll the sprinkles in edible glitter. While you don’t have to do this, it does add that little simmer and sparkle that really puts these over the edge to me. And, this is a great step to do with your youngest chefs, as it’s safe and easy to accomplish.

Ingredients
- Butter – softened
- Brown sugar
- Granulated white sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Eggs
- All-purpose flour
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Unicorn sprinkles – make your own by mixing sprinkles or buy a mix
- Edible glitter – also fun in drinks including milk or even water
- Food coloring
Directions
In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugars. Then stir in the vanilla extract and eggs.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Now stir the dry ingredients in with the butter mixture. A soft dough ball will form.
Divide the dough into two or three segments. Use food color to color each segment by stirring it in.
Prepare the sprinkles by adding them in a bowl with half a teaspoon or more of edible glitter. Mix them together so the sprinkles get coated in the glitter.
Create dough balls from the segments, so each cookie will have a few different colors. Then roll the dough balls in the sprinkles and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake at 325°F (163°C) for 10-11 minutes. Allow to cool before eating.
