What is a Dreidel?
The dreidel is a four-sided top that is spun and used in a game during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. It has a Hebrew letter printed on each side, and players take turns spinning the top to try and win the game.
Why kids love making a Dreidel Garland for Hanukkah:
- Kids love to get in on the holiday spirit, and making a paper garland is an easy way for kids to feel involved in making their own holiday decorations.
- Cutting out the paper templates with scissors is a great way to sharpen their scissor skills for older kids, and younger kids can work on threading by adding the dreidels to a piece of yarn to hang.
- Doing a Hanukkah craft is a great time to talk about what the components of the craft and learn more about the holiday (or appreciate a new culture if it’s not their own).
What you’ll need to make a Dreidel Garland:

How to Make a Dreidel Garland:
- Print out your dreidel template and cut out your shapes to trace (you can also print right onto colored paper if it’s an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper and just cut them).
- Trace your shapes onto your desired color paper as many times as you want and then cut out your dreidel and star shapes. Fold your paper in half before tracing if you want to cut two shapes at once!
- Glue your stars onto your dreidels with a glue stick or school glue.
- Use a hole punch to punch a hole at the top of each dreidel stem (or use scissors to cut a small slit for the yarn to go through) and thread some yarn or twine through the holes. You can wrap a piece of tape around the threading end to make it like the stiff end of a shoelace for easier threading through the holes.
- Hang up your dreidel garland and you’re ready to celebrate!
Tips for Making a Dreidel Garland:
- Smaller kids can help draw or paint on the dreidels before threading them on.
- If using yarn for your hanging thread, wrap a piece of tape around the threading end to make it like the stiff end of a shoelace for easier threading through the holes.
- When cutting out your colored paper, fold your paper in half before tracing and you’ll get two shapes per cut to save time!
