Ready to hatch some dinosaur eggs?! My son loved this activity! Making fizzy dinosaur eggs is a great way to create a little science magic with a fun experiment. This activity takes about 5-10 minutes to put together and is a basic way to introduce the reaction between baking soda and vinegar.
This activity is ideal for preschool and early elementary, my kindergartener thought it was pretty cool! Be sure to use a container and make sure the contact with vinegar is limited- you don’t want to spill it or let it get in anyone’s eyes! Putting together a dino week? Pair with our free printable dinosaur template, printable dinosaur memory game or have kids make their own dinosaur scratch art!

What are Fizzy Dinosaur Eggs?
Fizzy dinosaur eggs are a simple combination made from water and baking soda. The paste sticks together and you mold it around a plastic dinosaur toy. What makes it a fun sensory activity is letting kids ‘hatch’ the dinosaur by adding vinegar to the egg. It’s a great way to introduce the concept of a chemical reaction and how an acid reacts to a base! The coolest part is seeing the dinosaur emerge from the egg!
Supplies You’ll Need for This Dinosaur Science Activity
This setup will make about 5 dinosaur eggs. If you’re wanting to make a larger batch, double or triple the recipe.
- 2 Cups Baking soda
- 1/2 Cup Water
- Food Coloring (optional)
- Vinegar
- Small plastic dinosaur toys
- Dropper for science experiment
- Tube, bowl or other container to put them in.
- Bowl for mixing the baking soda and water

Step by Step How to Make Fizzy Dinosaur Eggs
Start by adding your baking soda into a large bowl and slowly mixing in the water. Add in your food coloring if using. I used regular liquid coloring, you could also use gel if you’re wanting more vibrant colors.

Once it’s starting to mold together, add your dinosaur toy to the mixture and surround with more of your paste so that the toy is completely hidden.

Allow to dry for 30 minutes to an hour, or you can dry overnight. Put in a tote or container where kids can see the chemical reaction without a chance of it making too much of a mess.

Next, it’s time for the dinosaur eggs to hatch! Add vinegar into a bowl and teach kids how to fill us their dropper with it by pressing and then releasing so that the tube fills. Ask them what they think will happen, then have them spray the eggs with vinegar!

It will take several times to make the egg completely hatch, but they’ll love working on it and seeing if they can guess which dinosaur toy it is! You can repeat as many times as you have eggs ready.
Dinosaur Books to Pair with this Activity
Try pairing with a fun dinosaur book to make a fun themed week like:
- Dinosaur Kisses by David Ezra Stein
- Groovy Joe Ice Cream & Dinosaurs by Eric Litwin
- We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins
- How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten by Jane Yolen

Storage and Tips for Fizzy Dinosaur Eggs
- To store these, keep them someplace cool and dry in an airtight container. Some people recommend storing in the freezer. Ours are typically ‘hatched’ pretty quickly!
- Have kids write down what they think will happen or guess how many times they’ll need to spray the eggs with vinegar to find the dinosaur.
- Pair certain colors of eggs with types of dinosaurs to make a matching activity or to learn about different species.
- Place your eggs in a large bin to help control or contain the opportunity for mess.
