Free Printable Monthly Reading Charts and How to Use Them!

Whether you have a child who loves the library or one who is just starting to be interested in reading, using a reading chart can be a great tool! We made this free printable monthly chart to help inspire readers to keep at it and track their progress.

You can use a reading chart to incentivize reading, it helps to have a visual tool to really create a routine around reading. We’ve included a cute printable chart with corresponding icons for each month of the year. The download is available in full color and black and white for easy printing.

How to Use a Reading Chart

Reading charts are great because they can instill a sense of achievement or accomplishment in kids. You can use it to create a rewards system where they can earn prizes or even just bragging rights. One way to customize a reading chart is to use it to count either pages read, minutes read, or total number of books read. Make sure to count reading time you do together! Reading together is one of the best ways to help kids increase their vocabulary, and it can create such a special bond.

Ideas for Using it for Kids

Let the child color in each icon with a crayon, colored pencil, or marker. They’ll start to look forward to marking it off their list!
Use stickers or stamps that are just for their reading charts.
Create a fun list of ‘prizes’, from getting to watch the movie that goes along with the book they’re reading to getting 15 minutes of iPad time.
You can designate different reward ‘levels’ by certain numbers of icons being crossed off.
Laminate the chart so you can reuse it year over year!
