We’re got a simple, fun, and easy to make Hanukkah craft for you today. We’re creating a menorah painting with pasta and beans (or lentils) or added texture. You can easily use items already in your pantry to create this menorah pasta and lentil art project.
Pasta and lentils are great supplies to use for crafting. They’re fun to paint and use to make all kinds of landscapes, collages, or even by stringing them together to make jewelry.
It’s a fun and easy supply to keep on hand. Just keep in mind the age of the child crafting to make sure it’s not a choking hazard.

How Many Candles are on a Menorah?
This craft is a great way to teach little ones about the Hanukkah holiday and Jewish traditions. The menorah plays an important part in celebrating the holiday. You can talk about it while working on the craft project or after reading a book about the celebration.
Hanukkah includes a nightly ritual of lighting a candle once per day for eight days. A menorah with nine candles includes one candle for each night as well as a shamash (“servant”) candle, which is used to light the other candles.
On the first night, two candles are lit (the samash and one other). On the second night, three candles are lit, and so on.
How Kids Can Help with this Craft:
- Kids can paint the paper base of the project.
- Kids can help choose and glue on the pasta and lentil pieces.
- Kids can help paint the pasta and lentil pieces after the glue has dried.
Craft Supplies:
- Different types of pasta: penne, rotini, radiatore
- Acrylic paint
- School glue
- Lentils
- Large paper (I used watercolor paper)
How to Make the Menorah:
- Begin by painting a menorah onto the paper. Allow to dry.
- Glue pasta and lentils all over the menorah to highlight the shape of the menorah. Add lentils to the background as decoration. Allow to dry.
- Paint pasta pieces to match.
Tips:
- If this is an educational project, you can make it in the traditional colors of blue and silver.
- Talk about the different pasta shapes and textures to make it a sensory project, too!
- If you don’t want to paint the background, you can start with construction paper in the color of your choice.
