Need a fun and easy Valentine’s Day craft? These heart shaped animals are a fun way for kids to learn about how shapes can be used to make other things. Using our heart template I made 10 different animals out of hearts and they make a super easy craft or would make a fun DIY Valentine’s Day card!
We used our free printable heart download below that has several hearts in all different sizes. Toddlers and preschoolers can help decorate the animals or pick which animals to make, while older kids can do most of the cutting and glueing!

Tips for making heart shaped animals:
- Cut out several hearts to start and have kids try putting them together and see what animal ideas they come up with!
- Have a handful of craft supplies on hand to help the creativity. Glitter glue, googley eyes, pipe cleaners and poms would be fun additions.
- Read ‘My Heart is Like a Zoo’ and have the kids count how many hearts they can find before making their own creatures.
Supplies
- Heart Template
- Scissors (make sure they’re age appropriate)
- Printer paper for the template and cardstock
- Glue or glue stick
- marker, pen and/or small craft items like googley eyes, pipe cleaners, poms and glitter.
Heart Shaped Bumblebee
This heart-shaped bee is so sweet! To make it I used yellow and black cardstock. I started with a base of yellow for the body, using a heart template and then added a head, wings and legs. I used black paper to make stripes and the antennas but you could also just use markers or crayons! Googley eyes worked better for this creature since the paper was black.
Heart Shaped Frog
This little frog is holding his heart and would make a fun card! Add a sweet message and he’s ready to hop away with it. I used 4 medium hearts for the hands, feet and the heart being held. Two small hearts for the eyes and then I cut out a few tiny white hearts as pupils. You could use googley eyes too!
Bear Face Made from a Heart
This one is ‘bear-y’ special!! Puns at Valentine’s Day are required. And how cute would that be written on the back? I made my bear purple but he could be any color. You’ll need 6 hearts total, I cut one medium heart in half for the ears.
Lady Bug
For the ladybug heart I cut apart a medium red heart for the wings and glued them to a medium black heart. Then I used another small black heart for the wings. Cut strips for the antennas and cut out mini hearts (or use a hole punch). Glue together and draw hearts on the wings instead of dots!
Hippo
There’s just something fun about making a hippo face out of heart shapes! The nostrils and ears are just extra mini hearts I cut out. The main nose piece is a heart cut off and the ears are the tops of a small heart. Add small scraps of white for the teeth and your hippo is ready!
Pig Face from Heart Shapes
This barn yard favorite is super sweet and made with 6-8 hearts. It has 3 small hearts for the snout and then it’s mini hearts for the inside of the ears and nostrils. You could also draw or color these on.
Lion Face
This lion is roaring how much he loves you! See this tutorial for all the steps in creating this lion! It was so fun to write a post for Rad Ted Art!
A Fish Valentine from Hearts
How many puns can you make for a fish? I’m ‘o-fish-ially’ counting! I used one large green heart, a medium light-blue for the tail and 2 smaller blue hearts for the smaller fin and mouth. You could make all kinds of fishies for your animals from heart shapes craft!
Elephant from Heart Shapes
This elephant is made from one large heart, 2 medium hearts and 3 small pink ones! I cut a strip for the trunk, you can make it as big or small as you want! Then I used markers to draw on the eyes.
Dog from Hearts
This puppy is all heart eyes for Valentine’s Day! He’s made from two medium hearts and 3 smaller ones. I cut the large darker blue heart in half to create the ears and drew on heart eyes. You could use googley eyes or pom poms too.
