Lunar New Year Tic-Tac-Toe is a classic game and can be a fun way to teach children or students about Lunar New Year, which celebrates the arrival of spring. Lunar New Year in 2023 is on Sunday, Jan. 22, and celebrates the Year of the Rabbit.

Playing a game like Tic-Tac-Toe is a great way to teach kids about Chinese and Asian traditions while having fun. It’s a great beginner way to teach strategy, and is perfect for classrooms or while waiting for a meal at a restaurant.

There are two variations of this free download included below, it’s available to print in black and white in full color.

What You’ll Need:

  1. Tic-Tac-Toe printable template (available at the bottom of this post)
  2. Paper or cardstock paper
  3. Printer
  4. Tokens – you can use our printable tokens, or if you want to try something different you could use candy, stickers, little toys, scrap paper, or let them write on the pages!
  5. Self-laminating paper (optional, but recommended to make the cards and tokens reusable).

How to Play Tic Tac Toe:

  1. Start by giving each player a card. These printable cards are a grid with 3×3. You can use the traditional ‘x’ and ‘o’ for marking the squares, or you can use our printable tokens (how cute are the dumplings?) or any tokens of your choice!
  2. You set up the game by deciding who will be ‘x’ and who will be ‘o’, and then take turns putting your token in empty squares of the grid.
  3. The goal is to get three tokens or marks in a row. Whoever does that first wins. You can have your row go in a line diagonally, up, down or straight across.
  4. Once someone has won, you can clear the board and start over.

Tips and Ideas:

  • Going on a road trip? This makes a great game for a car ride!
  • You can reuse these sheets again and again! If you’re having children mark on them, consider laminating them and reusing them with a reusable marker.
  • These are perfect for a classroom party or to take to a restaurant while you wait for your meal.
