Chalk is such a summer staple. But it can also be…well kind of annoying to handle. Making your own sidewalk chalk paint is a great way to change up how kids can paint and play with chalk!
There are two different ways I’ve made this chalk paint. The first is with tempera paint, corn starch and water. The second is with broken chalk pieces and water. I’ll share each method below!

How to Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint with Tempera Paint
Key Supplies
- Tempera Paint
- Corn Starch
- Water

Step By Step

Step 1. Add water and cornstarch to a cup and mix. Then add a few drops of tempera paint to the mixture.

Step 2. It will be pretty thick but as you stir will begin to combine. You can add water or cornstarch to thicken or thin the mixture as needed.

Step 3. Paint! I used a regular paint brush and made several colors at once. The cornstarch really makes the colors pop.

- Chalk pieces
- Water
- I recommend a paper plate and a hammer to crush your chalk.

Step By Step

Step 1. Crush your chalk pieces. You can do this however you like. I used a hammer and did it on a paper plate. The paper plate was perfect because it help the crumbs and then I could just pour it into the cup with water.

Step 2. Combine your crushed chalk into your cup with water. Stir to combine.

Step 3. Paint on the cement. Add water or more chalk to change or adjust the consistency.

Cleaning Chalk Paint
I was a little nervous about the paint method and wondering if it would stain the driveway, but mine acted like normal chalk! If you have concerns do a test patch and hose it off to make sure it removes easily. The blue lasted a few days on my driveway but then faded off.
