This basic sand slime recipe is a variation of our fluffy cloud slime. It’s an easy recipe to follow and only takes 5 minutes and a few ingredients. This sand definitely made us feel like we had brought the beach inside with us! It’s the perfect activity to go along with an ocean-themed day or when learning about the earth.
Making your own slime is a fun activity and this sand slime is such a cool texture. It’d be fun to make this the same day or week as making our Moon Sand Recipe and comparing the textures! This recipe is a mixture of the marshmallow like consistency of cloud slime with the gritty texture of sand. I borrowed some sand from our sandbox for this one, but you could also use fine craft sand if you wanted to make a fun color or any type of sand really.
Safety Note:
Slime is a really fun activity, but it does require adult supervision. This is a craft/activity for children who are old enough that they would not try to eat the slime. It is not safe to eat. Remember that it’s more of a science/sensory experiment and take proper precautions, including washing hands appropriately.
Tips for Making Slime:
- If you’re planning on making lots of slime, I’d recommend buying your glue in bulk. This recipe does use a full regular sized container plus a bit extra.
- Make sure you’re using shaving cream and not a gel. You can get unscented if you’d like.
- The contact solution that you’re using must have boric acid and sodium borate; otherwise, it will not form the slimy consistency.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between fluffy and regular slime?
You can make “fluffy” slime by adding shaving cream to our simple slime recipe.
This creates a different texture that is fun to play with—kids will love stretching and squeezing the fluffy slime.
Sand Slime Ingredients:
You can easily double or triple this basic recipe depending how much sand slime you want to make.
- 6 ounces glue (3/4 cup)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 tablespoons contact solution
- 2 cups shaving cream
- 1 1/2 cups sand (I used sand our sandbox but you could also use craft sand or other varieties, it just may change your ratio of how much you use.)
How to Make Sand Slime:
In a mixing bowl, add the glue and stir in the baking soda to the glue. Add the contact solution. This gives you your basic slime base.
Once the slime is mostly mixed together, fold in the shaving cream. Add your sand gradually until you reach the desired texture you’re wanting.
Knead with your hands to really mix well.

Storing Slime:
Store fluffy slime in an airtight container. I like to use these reusable plastic food storage containers, but other containers (or even a Ziploc bag) can work. You just want to keep air from drying the slime out.
Fluffy slime, if stored well, can easily last three weeks or more. This slime filled the container and there was hardly any air at all, which is why I think it maintained that fluffy texture.
If you don’t store it in airtight container, you may only have super fluffy slime the first day of play and it will start to deflate.
