St. Patrick’s Day crafts are a fun way to celebrate and learn about the holiday. Holiday crafts help kids learn about the calendar year, and why we celebrate certain days when we do.

This shamrock fingerprint craft makes a perfect card to give a loved one or would be a great St. Patrick’s Day decoration.

This project is fun and accessible for all ages, but if you’re making it with a toddler, they may need a bit more help with some parts. The skills being worked on with this craft include cutting and glueing, as well as using paint and markers.

Learning About St. Patrick’s Day:

This craft is a great way to introduce children to holidays and traditions based off of the traditions from other countries. It can be used to tell children about Ireland and the history of St. Patrick’s Day.

A few fun facts to share!

  • St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated for over 1,000 years and started as a Catholic feast and tradition.
  • Chicago dyes their river green every year to celebrate.
  • Most clovers have three leaves, which is why a four-leaf clover is considered lucky.

Supplies for the Craft:

  1. Google eyes (2 per craft)
  2. Green acrylic or washable paint
  3. Light green card stock paper
  4. Green and black marker
  5. Glue stick or low temp glue gun
  6. Scissors
  7. 4 popsicle sticks
cut square of green paper
square of green paper with 4 green thumbprints

How to Make Your Fingerprint Shamrock:

  1. Cut a square of paper a little smaller than the size of your popsicle sticks.
  2. Paint child’s thumb with dark green paint and make four thumbprints in the middle of the paper, overlapping a little in a four-leaf clover shape.
  3. Use paint and paintbrush or a marker to add a stem on your clover.
  4. Glue on google eyes and draw a smile with a marker.
  5. Have the child write (or help them write) “SO LUCKY TO HAVE YOU” around your four-leaf clover.
  6. Glue two popsicle sticks onto each side of your paper, and then glue two more on the top and bottom to make a frame.

Tips for Your Shamrock Craft:

  • You can either paint the green paint onto the child’s thumb with a paintbrush, or you can let them dip their thumb into some paint if you don’t have a paintbrush handy.
  • You can use a marker to make the face if you don’t have googly eyes on hand.
