Tips and Substitutions
- Since each popsicle mold is a different size, you’ll want to figure out your mold capacity. Fill the mold with plain water. Then pour the water into a glass measuring cup to see how much it actually holds. Convert that amount to how many tablespoons or teaspoons that come out to. You can ask the internet for how many tablespoons in a 1/4 cup etc,. Divide that number of tablespoons/teaspoons by the number of colors you are using. Then you’ll have a rough idea of how much of each color to add. For example, mine came out to a little more than a tablespoon per color based on how much water my mold held.
- Keep in mind that items expand when they freeze, so add on the lower side so you have a bit of room for expansion.
- If you are just making a set or two of popsicles, you will have a lot of extra jello. You can either make pans of jello with the extra liquid and put them in the fridge to set, or just make half the power mixed with 1/2 cup hot water and 1/2 cool water to cut down on the amount your making. Then you can save the other half of the packet for later.
- You could rearrange the color order and make these for any theme! Make your own red, white and blue popsicles to go with our bomb pop drink for the 4th of July!
How to make Easy Jello Rainbow Popsicles:

Step 1. Mix your red color with 1 cup of hot water and stir until completely dissolved (1-2 minutes).

Step 2. Add in your 1 cup of cool water (or ice) and stir again until completely incorporated.

Step 3. Add your first layer of red to your popsicle molds, and freeze for 1 hour.

Step 4. Repeat the process with each orange and yellow, but add in your popsicle stick to your yellow layer once it’s been in the freezer for 15 minutes or so and is gelled enough to hold the popsicle stick upright.

Step 5. Keep adding your green, blue, and purple and allow your whole popsicle to freeze for about 12 hours before removing from molds.
You can run some warm water around the outside of your popsicle molds to help release your popsicles if they won’t come out at first.

How much of each color do I add to my popsicle mold?
Since each popsicle mold is a different size, you can determine your mold capacity by filling it with plain water and then pouring it into a glass measuring cup to see how much it actually holds. Then convert that amount to how many tablespoons or teaspoons that come out to (ask the internet for how many tablespoons in a 1/4 cup etc). Divide that number of tablespoons/teaspoons by the number of colors you are using and you’ll have a rough idea of how much of each color to add (for example, mine came out to a little more than a tablespoon per color based on how much water my mold held).
Keep in mind that items expand when they freeze, so add on the lower side so you have a bit of room for expansion.
What do I do with the extra jello?
If you are just making a set or two of popsicles, you will have a lot of extra jello, so you can either make pans of jello with the extra liquid and put them in the fridge to set, or just make half the power mixed with 1/2 cup hot water and 1/2 cool water to cut down on the amount your making and save the other half of the packet for later.
