In honor of Lunar New Year, I made these mooncakes-shaped crayons. In this post, I’ll show you how I made them using our crayons tutorial.
Making your own crayons is easy and fun! My kids love to help with unwrapping and breaking up the crayons. You can customize this project by using different shaped silicone molds. Here’s a link to the mooncakes silicone mold.

What are mooncakes?
A mooncake is a Chinese baked dessert. Mooncakes are made and eaten during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, which is in honor of moon watching and lunar appreciation.
Mooncakes are filled with bean paste and lotus seed paste. Mooncakes symbolize family reunion. Here’s a resource if you are interested in learning to make traditional mooncakes.

Notes
- I was told that soaking the crayons made them much faster to peel, so I tested this method for you. It worked very well for Crayola brand crayons.
- Other brands had too much sticky residue, and I found peeling them dry to be much easier. My advice is to test one crayon before soaking a whole box of them.
These are so pretty! I’ll make them and keep them in a cute bowl in between playtimes 🙂
